Ex Nihilo is an album built around the raw power of the power-trio format. Guitar, bass, and drums take center stage, supported by a consciously raw and direct production. Massive guitar riffs, heavy basslines, hard-hitting drums, and melodic vocal lines create an expression drawing inspiration from classic heavy rock, doom, and stoner rock, interwoven with hints of prog and a strong identity of its own.
The album marks a significant evolution in Ohmwork's sound. Rather than expanding their sonic footprint through endless layering, the band took the opposite approach. Ex Nihilo lets the three core instruments and their dynamic interplay carry the songs. The result is a visceral, organic record where the riffs have room to breathe, the rhythm section drives the tracks forward relentlessly, and the guitar shifts seamlessly between walls of heavy sound, melodic passages, and explosive moments.
The title Ex Nihilo—Latin for "out of nothing"—fits the album's character perfectly. The music moves between darkness and energy, heaviness and melody, the primitive and the progressive. While each song carries its own distinct flavor, they are bound together by an unyielding sense of intensity and purpose.
In the months leading up to the release, Ohmwork built momentum by rolling out six of the album's seven tracks as singles. From the debut single "YETI" through to "Reich" and "Taman Shud (The End)," the band gradually unlocked the door to the album one track at a time. This gave each song its own moment in the spotlight before everything culminated in the complete experience of Ex Nihilo.
With Ex Nihilo, Ohmwork ties all these threads together into their most focused and uncompromising album to date. It is a record that needs no unnecessary embellishment—it is heavy, loud, dark, and vibrant.
