After a string of singles across 2025 and into the new year, Leeds-based tech-metalcore outfit, The Mechanist, are due to release their colossal and conceptual debut LP, Synthetic Sun, on April 10th via self-release. The release of the LP also comes alongside the album's fourth and final single, "Sungazing", whose music video was directed by Ash Winter-Sim. The band state on the LP's overarching themes:

"Influenced by Sci-Fi and horror, Synthetic Sun tells the dystopian story of an astronaut tasked with repairing a ‘synthetic sun’, created in place of our natural dying sun to ensure the survival of humanity. On this one-way journey, the protagonist dreams of those he has left behind – whilst experiencing an inexplicable otherworldly presence."

Further, discussing the recent single, the band continue: "Sungazing is about a numb, detached existence, caught in cycles of monotony and emotional shutdown after a damaging relationship. As memories and resentment surface, there is a longing to burn the pain away by 'staring at the sun.'"

They conclude, "The song captures the moment between collapse and rebirth, where destruction feels like the only path to starting over."

Synthetic Sun was recorded, mixed and mastered by the band's own Sam Butterfield and Les Harrison, and follows the release of singles "Chemical Crash", "Parasite" and "Engram". Serving as the band's first full length LP, it also follows three previous EPs in 2017's Minds & Machines, 2019's Shape & Vision and 2023's Aftermath.

Now, stronger and more assured than ever, 2026 sees The Mechanist realise their full potential with Synthetic Sun, an 11-track, 36-minute masterclass in the realm of tech metal. From the anthemic and groove-laden "Stargazing", to the untethered chaos of "Invasive Procedures", and the swirling energetic heights of album closer "Haven", Synthetic Sun demonstrates the Leeds unit at the top of their game, and self-evidently only seeking to go up from here.

Novacaine Rating: 10/10

First discovered through 2024’s “Blacklight”, The Mechanist have remained firmly on my radar since.

Synthetic Sun marks a significant step forward, with a sound that feels more refined, expansive, and self-assured. While still rooted in their underground identity, the production and ambition here suggest a band operating on a much larger scale. Making them a name to watch in the months to come.
