Doedsmaghird is the new project from Yusaf “Vicotnik” Parvez, the mind behind longstanding leaders of the Norwegian metal scene, Dødheimsgard, and esteemed French multi-instrumentalist and Dødheimsgard guitarist Camille Giradeau.
Speaking about the new project, Yusaf said:
A concept of universal awareness that transcends the present individual experience and connect the dots across multiple timelines and dimension. Consciousness is like nodes within a vast, interconnected web, where the black medium current serves a conduit for information exchange. Within this singularity, all path leads inward, and the concept of time ceases to exist.
Every possible timeline, past and future converge into the enigmatic state of the omniverse consciousness. Palpable as a whispered secret, we present this intersection of experiences and outcomes. Symbolizing the unattainable potential that never was but is. This emergence through conflict and synergy shaped from the original entities involved. A transformation and innovation where two points in time merge into a point in the middle…
In the wake of the monumental release of Dødheimsgard’s 2023 magnum opus, following a period in pursuit of creating something inspired by the pioneering work of the revered ‘Satanic Art’ & ‘666 International’ releases, Yusaf “Vicotnik” Parvez brought Doedsmaghird into being as a parallel world & malformed companion of sorts, by infusing some of the primal grim essence of what motivated those genre classics, refined and reflected back into the modern age under a new mask with debut album ‘Omniverse Consciousness’.
In contrast to modern day Dødheimsgard, the origin and process of Doedsmaghird - rather than one of perhaps more meticulous and scrupulous focus - was one intentionally driven by instinct without over-thinking; to give flesh to something very real & honest sounding in its unfolding chaos and spontaneity. This sense of almost raw urgency was utilised to reflect the more time-restricted recording session experiences of Vicotnik’s earlier days, which in turn necessitated at times on-edge performances and more “in-the-moment” unreplicable magic.
The compositional style of ‘Omniverse Consciousness’ itself is primarily about embracing those intense moments and capturing this as the pure unbridled source; the album a journey of unyielding darkness, with lyrics conjured and delivered as a series of poignant & potent snapshots and blackened musings, reflecting upon and revelling in the despair amid an unravelling decrepit world.
‘Omniverse Consciousness’ was recorded and mixed by Vicotnik himself, with mastering work overseen by Tom Kvålsvoll at Kvalsonic Lab in Norway.
Novacaine Rating: 10/10!
Doedsmaghird wastes no time in plunging you into the epicentre of an intense experience with 'Heart of Hell', keeping you on your toes throughout the entire, sensational opening. And if this first track is the smorgasbord of what is to be expected through the rest of the album, it certainly does it's job, giving you a little taste of what lays ahead without immediately overloading the senses.
From woven layers of synths to unrelenting drums, Omniverse Consciousness truly delivers on everything it has been hailed to be, both a culmination of excellent work by Yusaf and Camille, and a foot into new, experimental territory in which an abundance of soundscapes are masterfully integrated within every track. When we were promised instinct before over-thinking, it absolutely was delivered.
I found myself really honing in on the unique little sounds I heard in the background of each track. It's clear an impressive arsenal of FX have been used when mixing these tracks and bringing them to fruition, giving every track it's own, personal flavour.
The curveball thrown in by 'Endeavour' was certainly a surprise, but nonetheless impressive and well-timed, allowing for a gentle break in the intense tracks. Soothing, melancholic notes paired with soft, haunting vocals certainly cleansed the palate ready for the storm of, what I believe to be the best track on the album, 'Death of Time'.
Forgive me for waxing lyrical in a cryptic way (again), but 'Death of Time' feels as though it should be being performed live in an old, decrepit church after the world has fallen to ruin. It truly is an ode to the descent into chaos and madness. A trip down the rabbit hole, if you will.
A massive hand to Yusaf and Camille for this wonderful brain-child they've produced, and their ability to craft an exhilarating, encapsulating experience!
