A WRITTEN INTERVIEW WITH: BLACK LESION

Black Lesion
Black Lesion Band 2024

Kicking off the start of our interviews in the First Edition of Novacaine Magazine are Black Lesion, who are a three-piece hard rock act from Edinburgh, Scotland.

Who are Black Lesion?

Black Lesion is a three-piece hard rock band, based in Edinburgh, Scotland. The band consists of lead vocalist and bassist - Andreas "Dre" Koutoupas, guitarist and backing vox-

Andrew "Andy" Murray and drummer and backing vox- Craig "Crag" Whitelaw.

We have rock, hard rock, grunge and metal influences in our music.

Black Lesion was formed in the latter of 2018 when we were all studying music in college. During this time, Andy's band just disbanded and Dre was looking for members for a new project.

The duo collaborated on Lesions initial material in which most songs ended up on the "Mindless Feeding Device" E.P. The band then recruited Crag, which his divergent drumming style solidified the group's sound.

What inspired you to form the band?

We were all looking for something more grounded at the time.

Over the years, we all have been in multiple bands and projects that never amounted to anything due to members having other commitments or creative differences. So, we thought the less members the better! People might say three is a crowd but it works for us!

What is Delusion all about?

We put a lot of thought and emotion in our songs and Delusion is no exception. It's the frustration of society's biggest lie. We’re led to believe our education holds significance, but in reality, it’s just a way to keep us busy while our parents' work. The diploma we receive? Largely meaningless. True winners see through this lie and reject it. The real losers are the “good” kids who buy into academia, ending up in debt and low-wage jobs.

Disengaged students are scorned and medicated - forced into society’s futile expectations. In death, this delusion persists for future generations.

What inspired you to put this track together?

An observation that we are living through nowadays. Especially people studying years to get their qualifications, only not to be able to find a job they spent hard working on and forced to work below minimum wage to survive.

What is the meaning behind the artwork?

It’s an exploration of what it means to be human. The mannequin symbolises the inauthentic self—the false version of ourselves we create to fit societal expectations. Beneath this facade, however, lies our true self, represented by "the bees." These bees harbour the emotions, thoughts, and experiences that shape who we are, silently festering beneath the surface. Suppressed and hidden for too long, they have finally broken free, exposing the authentic essence beneath the hollow shell.

What has been the reaction so far with this release?

We have received some very positive reviews from music critics and feedback from listeners. Delusion has also been played and is playing on multiple radio stations around the UK.

Thank you for interviewing us, we really appreciate all your help and support and it is an honour to be featured in your new magazine. We wish you guys all the best.
